A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Cos, gen. sg. cotis (s.f.III), abl. sg. cote, nom. & acc. pl. cotes: “any hard stone, flint-stone; a whetstone, hone, grindstone” (Lewis & Short); see stone.

NOTE: the genus Cotinus Duham., which is derived from a word “used by Pliny for the wild olive” (Fernald 1950) is reminiscent of this word for stones, as these trees are associated with “Calcareous rocky woods and bluffs” (Fernald (1950), as well as the pit or stone of the olive fruit.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
