A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Coral, esp. red coral: coralium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. coralio; curalium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. curalio; corallum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. corallo; corallius,-i (s.f.II), abl. sg. corallio = Gk. korallion and kouralion (Glare);

- (algae) Hab. ad saxa et corallia demersa in Adriatico ad Tergestum frequentior, in Mediterraneo ad Nicaeam rarius (Agardh), it grows more frequently on the submerged stones and corals in the Adriatic at Tergestum, more rarely in the Mediterranean at Nicaea.

- (alga) Hab. inter corallia spongiasque infra limitem maris (Agardh), it grows among the corals and sponges within the boundary of the sea.

- (algae) Hab. ad saxa et corallia demersa in Adriatico ad Tergestum frequentior, in Mediterraneo ad Nicaeam rarius (Agardh), it grows more frequently on the submerged stones and corals in the Adriatic at Tergestum, more rarely in the Mediterranean at Nicaea.

NOTE: coral: “a skeletal deposit produced esp. by certain anthozoan polyps 1. the richly red precious coral secreted by a gorgonian (Corallium nobile) 2. any marine deposit like coral resulting from vital activities of various organisms (as hydrocorals, stony corals, certain algae, or bryozoans and worms; a polyp or polyp colony ... united into branching, encrusting ... colonies; something bright red in color” (after WIII).
coral-colored (red): corallinus,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. carneus,-a,-um (adj.A), “flesh-colored; the pale red of Roses” (Lindley); cf. incarnatus,-a,-um (part.A): flesh-colored.
