A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Colum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. colo: “(obsol.) the placenta” (Lindley); = (obsol.) placenta (Jackson) [> L. “a strainer, filter, sieve” (Glare)]; see placenta.

(In Pliny): (Colum) “colitis, or inflammation of the colon” (Jones).

[> L. colon,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. colo; also colum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. colo; also colus,-i (s.m.II) = Gk. kOlon (a member) 1. The colon or great gut (the largest of the intestines), esp. as the part affected by the colic: coli tormentum [torture, anguish] of the colon]; coli dolor [pain of the colon] 2. A disease of the colon, the colic (Lewis & Short); Gk. kOlon (s.n.II): limb , member (of a body), esp. the leg; (of plants, limb, arm; in pl. also internodes” (Liddell & Scott)].
