A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Charcoal (a piece of): anthrax,-acis (s.m.III), q.v., abl.sg. anthrace; carbo,-onis (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. carbone, charcoal, coal = Gk. anthrax: charcoal, coal; see carbon.

NOTE: Charcoal: “a dark-colored or black porous form of carbon made from vegetable or animal substances (as from wood by charring in a kiln or retort from which air is excluded) and used for fuel ...” (WIII).

NOTE: in pharmaceutical Latin, carbon and charcoal = carbo,-onis (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. carbone (Bennitt):

[Pharm.] Carbo,-onis (s.m.III), carbon, charcoal.

Carbo animalis (gen.sg.animal (s.n.III), animal charcoal, bone-black.

Carbo ligni (gen.sg. lignum (s.n.II), wood charcoal.

resembling charcoal (i.e. black and brittle): carbonaceus,-a,-um (adj.A) (Stearn).

growing on charcoal: carbonicola,-ae (s.c.I), q.v., abl. sg. carbonicola.
