A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Bloom (Eng.noun):

1.. synonymous with blossom (Jackson), flower: flos,-oris (s.m.III), q.v., abl.sg. flore.

2. a covering or secretion of powdery or waxy pruinose material causing a whitish (glaucous) or bluish overcast on the surface of certain leaves and fruits; “a whitish powdery and glaucous covering of the surface, often of a waxy nature” (Fernald 1950);( in mycology) “a frost-like or flour-like surface covering” (Ainsworth & Bisby): pruina,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.; see caesius; see glaucous;

Glaucescence, q.v., a glaucous condition: glaucedo,-inis (s.f.III), dat. sg. glaucedini, acc. sg. glaucedinem, abl. sg. glaucedine; cf. ‘bloom,’ “a whitish powdery and glaucous covering of the surface, often of a waxy nature” (Fernald 1950);

- species foliorum glaucedine insignis, species notable for the glaucous condition of the leaves (Stearn).

- glaucedo superficiei frondis abaxialis congeneris similis, the glaucescence of the abaxial surface of the frond is similar to its congeners.

- ramuli quam in illo tenuiores et minus rigidi, folia angustiora haud glaucedine superfusa, caryopsides longiores nunquam laevigatae et nuspiam splendentes sunt (F. Muell.), the branchlets more thin than in that one, and less rigid, the leaves more narrow, hardly overspread with glaucescence [i.e. a bloom], the caryopses longer, never smooth, and d are nowhere glittering [i.e. shining with an interrupted surface].

- stipes in [alpha], pruina alba tectus, stipe in [variety a] covered with a white bloom.

- foliis pruina densa glauca differt, it differs by the leaves with a dense, glaucous bloom.

- [fungus] aetate juniore pruina quadam caesio - cinerea , in adultis evanida, totus obductus, at a younger age, the whole covered with a a certain powder glaucous-blue-gray, gone in the adults.
