A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Barrel (Eng.noun): dolium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. dolio.

Barrel (Eng. noun): “a round bulging vessel of greater length than breadth that is usu. made of staves bound with hoops and has flat ends of equal diameter” (WIII).

Cask (Eng. noun): “any barrel-shaped vessel made of staves, headings, and hoops usu. closely fitted together so as to hold liquids” (WIII); casks, like barrels, possess a bulge in the middle.

Cupa,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: “a tub, cask, tun, vat, etc., for holding liquids, esp. wine” (Lewis & Short); see tub.

Dolium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. dolio, also doleum,-ei (s.n.II), abl.sg. doleo: a large earthenware jar or wooden cask, very large and of globular shape with a wide mouth in which new wine [or grain, etc.] was placed; a barrel, cask (Lewis & Short); cf. amphora,-ae (s.f.I).

Keg (Eng.noun): “a small cask or barrel having a capacity of 30 gallons or less; the contents of a keg” (WIII).

Orca,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.: = Gk. orchE, a large-bellied vessel, a butt, tun; “a large narrow-necked earthenware vessel” (Glare).

Orcula,-ae (s.f.I): a small earthenware jar, a small tun, a cask [dim. orca,-ae (s.f.I)].

Tonna,-ae, also tunna,-ae (s.f.I) = a ‘tun;’ tun (Eng.noun): a large cask holding liquids, especially for wine, beer, ale = 252 gallons.
