A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Anthophore, “a short stalk or internode which sometimes intervenes between the calyx and petals, supporting the latter and the inner organs” (Lindley); “a short stalk which sometimes occurs between the calyx and petals, supporting the interior organs, as in Silene” (Jackson); “a stalklike extension of the receptacle on which the pistil and corolla are borne (as in the pinks)” (WIII): anthophorum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. anthophoro, nom.& acc. pl. anthophora, gen.pl. anthophororum [> Gk. anthos, flower + Gk. phoros > Pherein, to bear]; cf. carpophore, gynophore, stipe;

- [Caryophylleae] petala totidem hypogyna toro plus minusve elevato (Anthophoro dicto) inserta (DeCandolle), just as many hypogynous petals [i.e. as the sepals] inserted on a more or less elevated torus.

- [Silene] calycibus ovatis 10-striatis, petalis minimis, anthophoro nullo. (DeCandolle), with the calyces ovate 10-striate, with the petals tiny, with no anthophore.

- [Silene] petalis bifidis, anthophoro vix capsulae longitudiue (DeCandolle), with the petals bifid, with an anthophore scarcely with the length of the capsule.

- [Silene] anthophoro brevi crasso, with the anthophore short, thick.

- [Silene] Aff. S. rupestri sed anthophoro longiore (DeCandolle), related to Silene rupestris but with the anthophore longer.

- [Eulychnis] anthophorum longum aut in quibusdam subabbreviatum (DeCandolle), the anthorphoe long or in certain [sc. species] slightly shortened.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
