A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Anser,-eris (s.m.III), abl. sg. ansere: a goose; “a goose; sacred to Juno, and which preserved the Capitol in the Gallic war. Hence held in high honor by the Romans” (Lewis & Short); see fowl; see goose;

Gosling (Eng.noun), a young goose: anserculus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. anserculo.

Didymodon anserinocapitatus: “goose-headed” referring to the leaf tips shaped like the heads of geese.

cf. “gooseneck (Eng.adj.): “something (as a faucet or pipe) curved like the neck of a goose or U-shaped” (WIII).

Anser,-eris (s.m.III), “a genus of birds (family Anatidae), comprising the typical geese” (WIII); anseres,-um (pl.m.III), pl. of anser,-eris (s.m.III), ‘goose,’ a suborder of Anseriformes, including ducks, geese, swans and mergansers; Anseriformes: pl. anser + formes [perhaps modifying ‘aves’ pl. of avis (s.f.III)]; “an order of birds comprising the ducks, geese, swans, and mergansers and the screamers” (WIII).

"Wildfowl" or just "fowl" are also often used for the Galliformes, but usually these terms also refer to waterfowl (Anseriformes)” (Wikipedia, ‘Galliformes’ Jan 2020).

Anseriformes, an order of birds including mostly those adapted for living on the surface of water, includes the Anatidae, the largest family including over 170 species of waterfowl, including the ducks, geese and swans.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
