A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Aetas,-atis (s.f.III), abl.sg. aetate: generation, period, era; lifetime, period of one’s life; age, q.v.; cf aevum,-i (s.n.II);

NOTE: not to be confused with aestas,-atis (s.f.III), q.v., the summer season.

-“pueritia,-ae (s.f.I), from birth to the 15th year; adulescetia,-ae (s.f.I), from that year to the 30th; juventus, gen.sg. juventutis (s.f.III), to the 45th year; the age of the seniores, to the 60th; and finally senectus,-utis (s.m.IV), from that time till death” (there are other kinds of divisons) (Lewis & Short).

- aetate (abl.sg.) with age, i.e. maturity or ripeness; in time.

- aetas,-atis (s.f.III) aurea, abl.sg. aetate aurea: golden age.

- flores ex albo purpurascentes, aetate ut in Cheirantho vario. (DeCandolle), the flowers from white to purplish, with age [i.e. in maturity] as in Cheiranthus varius.

- aetas media (adj.A), abl. sg. aetate media, middle-age.

- aetas,-atis (s.f.III) juventa, period of youth.

- aetas,-atis (s.f.III) senecta, period of old age.

- aetas,-atis (s.f.III) senilis (adj.B), old age;

- [fungi] minuta, notabilis, sed in aetate senili tantum (ut videtur) inventa: in Oxyacanthae ligno nudo pluviis macerato (S&A), minute, distinctive, but encountered in old age alone (apparently): on the bare wood of Exyacantha, softened in rainy places.

- [Lichen decipiens] Fig. I. Terrae glebula, indiuidua variae aetatis et figurae continens (Hedw.), Figure 1. a clump of earth, containing individuals of various ages and shapes.

- e primordiis sero autumno obviis mediam insequente vere attingit aetatem; matura occurrit Jul. Aug. (S&A), from its first beginnings encountered in late autumn, it reaches middle-age in the following spring; mature [i.e. plants] occur in July, August.

- vaginae mucosae aetate provecta interdum diffluentes semper hyalinae, sheaths mucous with advanced age sometimes disappearing (wasting away) always hyaline (Stearn 1983).

- secundum aetatem, depending on age, according to age (secundum = prep. + acc.).

- valvis aetate omnino solutis ad commissuram (F. Mueller), with the valves with age completely separated at the commissure [i.e. suture or seam].

- aetate, with age (after time has passed, but not aged or old): vestimento foliari tomentello vel aetate glabrescenti, with the leaf vestiture tomentellous or with age glabrescent.

- mycelia aetate duarum vel trium hebdomadum longitudinem 2-3 cm. attingentia, mycelia at the age of two or three weeks attaining a length of 2-3 cm.

- coloniae aetate duarum vel trium hebdomadum, colonies at the age of two or three weeks, 2- or 3-week-old colonies (Stearn).

- spicae prima aetate capitatae, dein unciae longitudine (Swartz), the spikes at the beginning of their lives capitate, ultimately 2.5 cm in length.

- vaginae secedentes hyalino-membraneae, aetate nervos setiformes relinquunt (F. Mueller), the splitting sheathes hyaline-membranous, with age leave behind bristle-shaped nerves.

- capsula magna subvelutina lignosa tuberculis subconicis fere asqualiter echinata, valvis aetate basin versus cohaerentibus ad commissuram tuberculato-asperis (F. Mueller), the capsule large, somewhat velutinous, woody, nearly evenly echinate with subconic tubercles, with the valves in age toward the base coherent to the tuberculate-roughened commissure [i.e. suture or seam].

- [fungi] semel gregaria lecta aliquot exempla (variarum aetatum) e stercore vaccino pronata, in via graminosa umbrosa sylvatica (S&A), once some colonial samples collected (of various life stages) prostrate from cow-dung, in a grassy, shaded sylvan path.

provectus,-a,-um (part.A), compar. provectior,-ius (adj.B): advanced, carried forward, extended [> L. proveho,-xi,-ctum to carry or convey forth; to carry or cause to move forward, to extend (in space); to advance (in time)];

- aetas (-atis, s.f.III) provecta, advanced age.

Juventus, gen.sg. juventutis (s.f.III), abl. sg. juventute: season of youth, youth, youthful state; (of young persons) “the age of youth (from the twentieth to the fortieth year); youth” (Lewis & Short).

Vetustas,-atis (s.f.III): age, old age, long existence or duration, great age; antiquity, ancient times [> L. vetustus,-a,-um (adj.A)].
