A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Aestas,-atis (s.f.III), abl. sg. aestate: the summer season "as one half of the year, from March [23] to September [22]," "the three months from the entrance of the sun into Cancer to the autumnal equinox (the entrance into Libra" (Lewis & Short); hiems, q.v., winter, is the other half; see solstitium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. solstitio, the summer time, the heat of summer; see summer; see season;

NOTE: not to be confused with aetas,-atis (s.f.III), q.v., ‘age.’

- ‘Gemmas’ appello Arborum & Fruticum foetus novellos, quos quotannis, ut dixi, aestate pariunt (Ray), I call [i.e. designate] the young [i.e. new] fetuses the ‘gemmae’ [i.e. ‘buds’] of trees and shrubs, which every year [i.e. annually], as I have said, they bring forth in summer.

- aestate, in summer; aestate ineunte, nova aestate (both in abl. sg.), at beginning of summer.

- vere vel aestate fructificanti differt, it differs by fruiting in spring or summer.

- aestas media (adj.A), midsummer; abl. sg. aestate media, in the middle of summer.

- hieme et aestate (both abl. sg.): in winter and summer, i.e. in all seasons.

- adulta aestate in the middle of summer, summa aestate; exacta aestate, at the end of summer: all abl.sg.

- eligit sibi ligna humentia putredine emollita imprimis pinea et abiegna, quae neutiquam rara incolit vere et aestate (S&A), it chooses for itself moist woods softened with rot, in particular pine [i.e. Pinus] and fir [i.e. Abies], which it inhabits, being not at all rare in spring and summer.

- [fungus] Cyathus olla var. agrestis: Utraque var. in hortis, agris, ruderatis hinc inde frequens. Aestate et autumno (S&A), each var. [i.e. of the two varieties] frequent here and there in gardens, fields, rubbish heaps. In summer and autumn.

– thermometrum aestate a 26 gradibus usque ad 32 ascendit, sed calores ventis circa horam nonam matutinis e mare spirantibus nocturnisque roribus temperantur (Desf.), the thermometer in summer rises from 26 degrees to 32 [degrees], but the heats are regulated by the morning winds around the nineth hour blowing from the sea, and by the night damps [i.e. dews].

- [the making of sour wine; vinegar] Hieme durat, sed prima acescit aestate Palladius), in winter it hardens [ = solidifies], but it first turns sour in summer.
