A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Abbreviations (Eng.plural noun): in the reduplicative form of the plural...," plural abbreviations may be represented by duplicate letters:

(in Lewis & Short) English adv. = adverb, advv. = adverbs (p. 1978) "After other advv."

p. = page (p.245, page 245); pp. = pages (pp. 245-250, pages 245 to 250).

(words in Latin grammars) f. feminine (singular) ff. feminine (plural), m. masculine (singular), mm. masculine (plural), n. neuter (singular) and nn. neuter (plural).

pron., pronoun; pronn. pronouns

Examples:

f., filius (son); ff. filii (sons).

ms. or MS. manuscriptum, a manuscript; mss or MSS. manuscripta, (several) manuscripts.

F. (Eccl. abbr.) frater (brother), FF. = fratres (brothers).

LL.B: legum Baccalaureus, baccalaureat of Laws.

LL: (abbrev.) plural of lex, gen.sg. legis (s.f.III), ‘law,’ ll. = leges (nom.& acc.pl., legum gen.pl.): Legum Doctor (LL.D.), Doctor of Laws: “the double "L" in the abbreviation refers to the early practice in the University of Cambridge to teach both canon law and civil law (Doctor of both laws), with the double "L" itself indicating the plural” (Wikipedia)

NOTE: D. = dominus (lord); DD domini (lords); DDD, domini tres (three lords).

NOTE: the adj. abbreviation doubled in the superlative:

r. = rarus, rare; rr. = rarrisimus, very rare (Stearn).

NOTE: not all duplicate letters indicate plurals;

e.g. ssp. indicates sub + species, subspecies.

err. = an error or mistake.

ill. = illustris,-e (adj.B), q.v.: celebrated (Stearn).

litt. = in litt., in litteris, in letters, pl. of litera,-ae (s.f.I), i.e. in correspondence.

adj. adjective; adjj. adjectives.

auct. Auctor; auctt. Auctores; sec. auctt., secundum auctores (according to authors); ex auctt., ex auctores (according to authors)

- In Germania ad rupes, ex auctt. citatis (Nyl.) in Germany on rocks, according to the authors cited.

adv. adverb; advv. adverbs.

ex. exemplum (example); exx. exempla (examples); ex: exemplar (specimen), exx. exemplaria (specimens)

fig. figura (figure, illustration); figg. Figurae (figures).

f. sp., q.v., forma specialis (special form [fungi]; ff. spp. Formae speciales(special forms).

p. pagina (page in a book), pp. paginae (pages).

seqq.: sequuntur, they follow:

- nascitur inter folia putrida etc. in sylvis mixtis, apprime montosis, hinc illinc. Septembri et seqq. in Decembrem usque (S&A), it arises here and there among rotted leaves etc. in mixed woods, especially montain (in September and the following [sc. months] up to December.

sp. species (singular); spp. species (plural).

tabula: a plate (of illustrations), tabb. plates;

- cum tabb. 140, with 140 illustrations (tabulis).

var. varietas (a taxonomic variety), varr. varietates (varieties).

- crescunt varr. omnes tres ad stipites virgultave semiputria humentia acervata tecta, praesertim Vitem (S&A), all three varieties grow on covered stalks and moist accumulated semi-rotted undergrowth, especially Vitis [i.e.‘grape’].

- [fungus] nascuntur varr. omnes tres in sylvaticis umbrosis frondosis (S&A), all three varieties grow in (broad-)leaved shaded wooded [sc. places].
