A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
-stomus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. –stomo: in Gk. comp., a noun suffix in (zoological) generic names: “having a specified kind of mouth, pore, orifice or other opening” [> Gk. stoma,-atis (s.n.III), q.v. ‘mouth’]; cf. -stomum,-i (s.n.II);

Creature with (such a) mouth – in generic names:

[fish] Agonostomus,-i (s.m.II), a genus of fish (Mugilidae) ‘the mullets.’

[fish] Catostomus,-i (s.m.II), a genus of fish (Catostomidae) ‘the suckers.’

[rodent] Lagostomus,-i (s.m.II), the ‘plains viscacha,’ with a resemblance to a rabbit (Chinchillidae).

[bat] Phyllostomus,-i (s.m.II), a genus of leaf-nosed bat (Phyllostomidae) [after WIII].
