A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
-stemon,-onis (s.m.III), abl. sg. –stemone: in Gk. comp. –stamen, –stamened, -stamonous, having a (specified kind of) stamen [> Gk. stEmOn,-onos (s.m.III), Doric, stamOn,-onos (s.m.III): the warp in the upright loom; a thread that has been spun, a filament (Liddell & Scott), cf. Latin: stamen,-inis (s.n.III); (in botany) “stEmOn, a filament” (Jackson); see stamen (Eng. noun).

NOTE: this is a noun suffix (not an adjective); when used in epithets, the compound word is a noun in apposition to the generic name, with its own gender (masculine) and declension (Third); cf. the Eng.suffixes –stemonous,-stamened.

- oedostemon,-onis (s.m.III), oedostemonous, with a swollen stamen; psilostemon,-onis (s.m.III): psilostemonous, “with glabrous stamens” (Stearn 1996) = psilandrus,-a,-um (adj.A).

- Chiococcae phaenostemoni Schlechtendal affinis, related to Chiococca phaeostemon (both dat. sg); genus is feminine, epithet is masculine.

- allagostemon,-onis (s.m.III): stamens inserted alternately upon petals and the receptacle; callistemon,-onis (s.m.III), with beautiful stamens; corynestemon,-onis (s.m.III), with club-shaped stamens;

dasystemon, dasystemonous, with shaggy stamens; oligostemon, oligostemonous, with few stamens; phaeostemon,-onis, with a dark stem; platystemon, with broad stamens; polystemon, with many stamens.

[Physostemon] stamina 6-8, 2—4 superiorum filamentis infra antheram inflatis (B&H), the stamens 6-8, 2-4 of the upper ones with the filaments below the anther inflated.

Callistemon,-onis (s.m.III). The name refers to the beautiful scarlet colour of the stamens of some species; and is derived from kallistos, beautiful, and stemon, a stamen (Paxton).

Distichostemon,-stemonis (s.m.III), abl. sg. Distichostemone with stamens in two rows or ranks.

Penstemon,-onis (s.m.iII) > Gk. "pente, five + stemon, in the sense of stamen; the fifth stamen being present and conspicuous, although sterile" (Fernald 1950).

[Australia: in F. Mueller:] Chrysostemon; Eriostemon; Gyrostemon; Lophostemon; Odontostemon; Synostemon; Xanthostemon.

- OXYSTEMON: species unica Novo-Granatensis, a nobis non visa, ex charactere dato a sectione Euclusia non differt nisi sepalis multiplicatis(10 nec 4 - 5) (B&H), a single species of Nova Granata [i.e. Colombia, or Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela], not seen by us, by the character given it does not differ from section Euclusia except by the sepals multiplicate (10, not 4-5).

[genera] Loxostemon,-onis (s.m.III); Platystemon,-onis (s.m.III), abl. sg. Platystemone; Sterigmostemon.

- LEPIDOSTEMON. Stamina libera, omnia squama lata appendiculata (B&H), the stamens free, all appendaged with a broad scale.

- [Dontostemon] stamina breviora edentula, longiora per paria connata (B&H), the stamens shorter, lacking little teeth, longer, connate in pairs.

Tulipa subgenus Leiostemones Boissier.

Stigmatostemon, “(obsol.) a body formed by the union of anthers to the stigma” (Lindley): stigmatostemon,-onis (s.m.III), abl. sg. stigmatostemone.

Stylostemon,-onis (s.m.III), abl. sg. stylostemone: an epigynous stamen (Jackson).
