A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
-solen,-solenis (s.m.III), abl.sg. –solene; also –solena,-ae (s.f.I): in Gk. comp., -pipe, pipe- [> L. solen,-enis (s.m.III), abl.sg. solene “a kind of sea-mussel, the razor-fish: the Solen, of Linnaeus” (Lewis & Short); > Gk. sOlEn,-Enos (s.m.III), also sOlEn,-Enos (s.m.III), primarily ‘channel, gutter, pipe, tube; grooved tile; also ’ “a shell-fish, perhaps the ‘razor-fish’ (Liddell & Scott)];

NOTE: in the northern temperate zone, the bivalve Ensis magnus (family Pharidae) is variously called the razor shell, razor clam and razor fish found on coastal beach sand in Canada and northern Europe. However, these common names also refer to members of the family Solenidae, including species of the genera Ensis and Solen L. (1758) (Family Pharidae included within the family Solenidae) (Wikipedia “Razor shell” Feb. 2023).

NOTE: the name Donax,-acis (s.m.III), q.v., in classical Greek and Latin, applied to the marine animals solen,-ensis (s.m.III).

Solenostoma,-atis (s.n.III), from solen, a tube or pipe + -stoma, a mouth; a genus of liverworts with channeled and suddenly narrowed perianth mouth.

Centrosolenia, Benth. From kentron, a spur, and solen, a tube. Corolla spurred. Gesneraceae (Paxton).

Dissolena,-ae (s.f.I), Loureiro. From dis, double, and solen, a tube; in allusion to the double tube of the corolla. Apocynaceae (Paxton).

Solenanthus,-i (s.m.II), Don. From solen, a tube, and anthos, a flower. Boraginaceae (Paxton).

Solenia,-ae (s.f.I) Hoffman. From solen, a -tube; on account of the tubular nature of the fronds. Confervaceae (Paxton).

Solenidium,-ii (s.n.II), Lindley. From solen, a tube [+ dim. –idion]. Orchidaceae (Paxton).
