A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
-ips, gen.sg. –ipis, third declension Latin nouns ending in; nouns derived from Greek third declension nouns ending in psi in the nom.sg. These do not form i-stem nouns in Latin.

Ips, gen.sg. ipis (s.m.III), q.v., abl.sg. ipe {> Gk. ἴψ (íps) [iota psi], a wood- and horn-eating worm cf. iptomai, ipsomai, to press hard; to oppress];

NOTE: in classical Greek, gen.sg. ipos, nom. pl. ipes (that is, the ‘s’ of the nom.sg. disappears). Note also the family name is Ipidae (not Ipsidae).

Knips, gen.sg. knipis, abl.sg. knipe, q.v.: = Gk. κνῑ́ψ (knī́ps) : an insect found in the bark of trees; a kind of insect that infests fig and oak trees and devours the gallfly (Liddell & Scott):

= σκνίψ, small creatures which infest fig and oak trees and devour the fig-insect (ψήν) (Liddell & Scott).

NOTE: in classical Greek, gen.sg. knipos, nom. pl. knipes (that is, the ‘s’ of the nom.sg. disappears).

Thrips, gen.sg. thripis (s.m.III), q.v., abl.sg. thripe: Gk. θρίψ (thríps): woodworm; “a kind of insect that attacks wood” (Glare) [family Thripidae).
