A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
-collus,-a,-um (adj.A): -necked, -collared [> L. collum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., the neck of man and animals; (generally) the neck-like prolongation of an organ; the point of junction between two organs; (in bryophytes) the sterile basal portion of a capsule, often strongly differentiated, the tapered base, or neck, of the capsule; collar, q.v.;

NOTE: to be distinguished from -cola,-ae (s.f.I), q.v.

NOTE: cf. collis,-is (s.m.III), abl.sg. colle: a hill, high ground;

- [moss] theca pedunculo subarcuato brevi clavato-pyriformis longicolla (C. Muell.), the theca with a slightly arcuate, short peduncle [=seta], club-shaped to pear-shaped, long-necked.

- [moss] theca ore amplissimo instructa sublongicolla (C. Muell.), theca provided with a very long mouth, [the theca] somewhat long-necked.

- [moss] theca ore amplissimo instructa sublongicolla (C. Muell.), theca provided with a very long mouth, [the theca] somewhat long-necked.

Pohlia longicolla (Hedw.) Lindb., a moss, 'the name refers to the well-developed neck of the capsule’ (C&A).
