STUDY SITES - Northern Vietnam - LAO CAI

Total Area: 8,050 sq. km
Population: 594,637
Districts: Bac Ha, Bao Thang, Bao Yen, Bat Xat, Sapa, Than Uyen, Van Ban

Economic potentialities: fruit gardens, cattle breeding.

ETHNIC DIVERSITY Lao Cai is one of several provinces situated on the Sino-Vietnamese border in the northwestern part of the country. Apart from the Kinh people, the province has several ethnic minority groups, including the H'mong, Tay, Dao, and Thai.

CLIMATE The province is endowed with both tropical and moderate climatic conditions. The average temperature in the high mountainous area is between 18 and 28°C, and between 20 and 22°C in the lowlands.
