Flora of the Venezuelan Guayana

BIGNONIACEAE

Lianas, the branchlets terete, interpetiolar glandular fields lacking (very rarely present), petiolar glandular field present; pseudostipules subconical, basally thicker, apically pointed, appressed against twig. Leaves 2-foliolate, sometimes with a minutely bifid (very rarely minutely trifid) tendril. Inflorescence a large terminal, many-flowered panicle. Calyx ± cupular, truncate to ± lobed, lepidote, usually ciliate; corolla magenta, tubular-campanulate, velvety moniliform-pubescent outside. Anthers glabrous, the thecae straight, divaricate. Ovary narrowly cylindric, the walls relatively thick, lepidote; ovules 2-seriate in each locule; disk annular-pulvinate. Fruit an elongate-linear capsule, the valves convex, finely tuberculate with the texture of coarse sandpaper. Seeds thin, 2-winged, the wings chocolate brown, not demarcated from seed body.

Mexico to Bolivia; 2 species, 1 in Venezuela.

Liana. Evergreen lowland to montane forests, 50-1000 m; widespread in the flora area. Also widespread elsewhere in Venezuela; Mexico to Bolivia and most of Brazil. Fig. 399.
