ORNAMENTAL PLANTS OF HORTICULTURE VALUE

Selection of perennials

Potentilla L.
Cinquefoil, five-finger
Rosaceae

A very large genus of about 500 species of which 200 species in FSU. Most are of wide distribution, some are endemics to the Caucasus, Siberia, Central Asia and the Arctic regions. Only a few are of decorative value.

P. megalantha Takeda

Potentilla megalantha
Far East (southern Kamchatka, Sakhalin), Japan and China. In hills on stony slopes.

Taprooted and rhizomatous plant, with flower stems 10-20 cm. Vegetatives shoots abbreviated, numerous, with green leaves throughout the year. Leaves ternate, 5-15 x 3-15 cm, silver-grey, softly pubescent. Flowers bright yellow, large, 4-5 cm diam. V - new growth early spring (April in St. Petersburg) to mid summer. Fl - May-June for 3 weeks. Fr - July. P - by seed, flowers the next year, also may be propagated by cuttings. Plant in a sunny place in the rock garden. Avoid places with wet soil. Z 4.

The following are also of horticultural value.

P. mollissima Lehm.

Central Asia (Pamiro Alay, Kopet-Dag). In rocky places.

Plant 25-50 cm, basal leaves 5-partipalmate, upper leaves undivided. Flowers large, 2.5-3.0 cm diam., bright yellow. New.

P. fedtschenkoana Siegfr. ex Th. Wolf.

Central Asia (Tien Shan). On grassy slopes.

Stems 20-50 cm. Leaves 3 or 5-7 palmate, leaflets dissected. Entire plant densely white-tomentose. Flowers numerous, bright yellow. New.

Both species can be propagated by seed. They require a sunny position and well-drained soil. Z 5 (4).
