A small genus of 6 species mainly in China, 3 in the FSU.

P. orientalis (Bieb.) G. Don fil.

Caucasus (the Greater Caucasus, western and eastern Transcaucasus, Dagestan), Central Asia (Syr Darya) and northeastern Turkey. In mountains, on rocky slopes, up to 2,000 m.

Rootstock and rhizome short, thickened. Leafy stems erect 40-60 cm. Leaves dark green, 8-11 x 4-5 cm, entire, oblong, basal ones heart-shaped. Inflorescence apical, almost umbel-like. Flowers violet, large. Calyx persists in fruit and become 2-3 times larger. V - mid spring to mid autumn. Fl - mid spring, usually May, for one month. Fr - June. P - by seed. Good for the rock garden. Requires a sunny position and well-drained soil. Dry resistant. Ornamental in flower and in fruit. Z 4 (3). New.
