Selection of perennials

The genus consists of 50 to 100 species, depending on classification, distributed world wide. Russian taxonomists consider there are about 75 species in the FSU, mainly in the arctic and the Caucasus. Some species became garden plants many years ago. For example, P. orientale L., the Oriental or Turkish poppy, well-known in horticulture, was taken from the Caucasus. P. nudicaule L., the Iceland poppy, occurs wild in Siberia and Dzungaria, P. croceum Ledeb. came into horticulture from southern Siberia and also occurs in the mountains of Central Asia.

Some species of ornamental value have been investigated in St. Petersburg.

Transcaucasus. Rocky places in the alpine zone.

Flowering stem 25-45 cm, flowers large, orange or pink. Fl - June. Closely related to P. orientale, the flowers do not have a dark spot at the base. Good for group planting. Z 4. New.

P. paucifoliatum (Trautv.) Fedde.

Caucasus. Subalpine meadows.

Flowering stem 35 cm, flowers pink-red. Fl - June. Also closely related to P. orientale L. Z 5 (4). All species prefer sunny places. P - by seed. New.
