ORNAMENTAL PLANTS OF HORTICULTURE VALUE

Selection of perennials

Ornithogalum L.
Ornithogalum, star-of-Bethlehem
Hyacinthaceae, formerly in Liliaceae

100 or 300 species, depending on classification. In the temperate and subtropical regions of Europe, Asia and Africa. In the FSU about 30 species, mainly in the Caucasus.

O. balansae Boiss.

Ornithogalum
Caucasus and Turkey. Subalpine and alpine meadows, rocky places.

Scape 7-10 cm, shorter than leaves. Bulb ovate, light brown, 1.5-2.5 cm diam. Leaves upcurved, spathulate, 8-12 cm x 1.5 cm. Star-like white flowers 5-10, in short cyme. Perianth-lobes with wide abaxial band. V - early spring to mid summer. Fl - early spring, in St. Petersburg April-May, in the Caucasus March-April. Fr - June. P - by seed and easily by daughter bulbs. Prefers sunny sites, with well-drained soil. Suitable for many landscaping situations. Z 4. Poorly known in cultivation.

O. boucheanum (Kunth) Aschers.

European parts of the FSU (southern regions), Balkan Peninsula and Anatolia. In forest clearings, among bushes, along streams, in valleys.

Scape stout, 20-50 cm. Leaves 4-6, bright green, linear 0.5-1.5 cm wide, with one white stripe inside. Raceme of 20-50 flowers. Flowers large, 1.5-2.5 cm long, of a silver-grey green colour. V - early spring to mid summer, in St. Petersburg April-June. Fl - mid spring (May). Fr - June-July. P - by seed and easily by offset bulbs. Good for group planting and as a cut flower. Z 4. New.
