Colchicaceae, formerly in Liliaceae

About 10-15 species in the Mediterranean region, 9 of which occur in the FSU mainly in the Caucasus and also in Central Asia.

M. sobolifera C. A. Mey.

Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran, Anatolia and the Balkan Peninsula. On rocky slopes, in subalpine meadows.

Tiny plant 5-10 cm. Bulb cylindrical, 7-9 cm long with dark coriaceous scales. Leaves 2-3, linear, 5-8 cm x 1-2 cm broad during flowering period, later elongated. Flowers pink, 1-3, 2-3 cm long, on short peduncles. V - early to late spring, in St. Petersburg March (April) to end May. Fl - March-April. Fr - May. P - by seed and by stolons (daughter bulbs). Prefers well-drained soil and sunny sites. Plant in rock gardens in combination with late-flowering plants. Z 4 (3).
