THE ORIGIN OF GARDEN PLANTS AND THE FSU CONTRIBUTION

The Macaronesian Center

This region was not considered by Vavilov as a place of origin of cultivated plants, but it is a significant range for ornamentals. It includes the Macaronesian Floristic Region. Of special interest are the Canary Islands and Madeira, which exhibit a great diversity of flora. Some fifty species, including the dragon tree (Dracena draco) and the date palm (Phoenix canariensis), species of Aloe, beautiful shrablett campanula (Azorina vidalii) and others, have entered the ornamental trade.
