Selection of perennials

Cimicifuga Wernish.
Snakeroot, cohosh bugbane
Ranunculaceae

About 15 species in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, 5 in the FSU, mostly in the Far East.

C. dahurica (Turcz.) Maxim.

Siberia (eastern Dahuria), the Far East (western and southern regions), eastern Mongolia, and northeastern China. Forests edges and shrub groves.

Rootstock and rhizome short. Flowering stem up to 110-200 cm. Lower stem leaves long-petiolate, 2-3 ternate, 75-90 cm x 45-55 cm, upper leaves smaller. Inflorescence cymose, to 70 cm long. Flowers white, minute, abundant. V - mid Spring to late Autumn. Fl - July-August for 3-4 weeks. Fr - September-October. P - by seed or division. Shade-tolerant. Z 4 (3).

C. foetida L.

Siberia (southeastern regions) and Mongolia. Forests, glades and meadows.

Rhizomes thick and short. Flowering stem about 80-150 cm. Lower stem leaves long petiolate, biternate, 35-65 cm x 25-60 cm, upper stem leaves with short petiole or sessile, smaller. Inflorescence simple, cymose, 30-60 cm long. Flowers greenish-yellow, minute. V - mid spring to late autumn (in St. Petersburg May to late October). Fl - July-September for 3-4 weeks. Fr - October. P - by division or seed. Shade-tolerant. Z 4 (3).

C. simplex (Wormsk. ex DC.) Turcz.

Of southeastern Siberia, the Far East, Mongolia, China and Japan.

Flowering stem 100-150 cm, usually unbranched; racemes cm long is also ornamental. Z 4.
