Selection of perennials

Astilbe Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don.
Astilbe, perennial spiraea
Saxifragaceae

About 12 species in East Asia and North America, of which 2 in the FSU.

A. chinensis (Maxim.) Franch. et Savat.

Far East (southern regions), northeastern China and Mongolia. Open broad-leaved forests, open places.

Rhizomatous perennial 100 cm. Leaves 2 or 3 ternately compound, biserrate, glossy above, dull below, with reddish pubescence on both sides. Basal leaves long, petiolate, stem leaves shortly so. Flowers lilac-pink in slender panicles. V - mid spring to mid autumn. (in St. Petersburg April to September). Fl - June-July. Fr - August-September. P - by division or seed. Grows well in partially shaded sites.

The second species from the Far East is A. thunbergii (Siebold et Zucc.) Miq. This species occurs on Kunashir (Kuril Islands) and in Japan and China. Panicles loosely branched, long and narrow. Flowers white or lilac-pink. Fl - July and August. Fr -
