PEAVINE PUBLICATIONS was established by Professor William P. Lowry in 1983, in McMinnville, Oregon, as a label for publishing meteorological and other texts he had written and had still to write.

Publications bearing the PEAVINE label include:

• Fundamentals of Biometeorology: Interactions of Organisms and the Atmosphere, Volume 1 and Volume 2, co-authored with his son Porter P. Lowry II and illustrated by Larry Milam; and
• Atmospheric Ecology for Designers and Planners, written by Professor Lowry and illustrated by his son, Samuel C. Lowry.

  On Professor Lowry’s death in 1998, his publishing company ceased operation. The Missouri Botanical Garden kindly agreed to continue distributing PEAVINE textbooks together with the MBG Press’s numerous other life science titles.

  The name PEAVINE was coined to conjure forest meadows on slopes overlooking Oregon’s rich Willamette and Yamhill Valleys. The logo represents the Douglas Fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii. The name is shared with a type of ocher-colored ferriferous soil prized by Oregon winegrowers, a road in the hills west of McMinnville, and tendrils of the wild sweet pea that mat the forest meadows, bringing them alive in springtime with scented white and purple flowers.
