Note: In all node characterizations, boldface denotes a possible apomorphy, (....) denotes a feature the exact status of which in the clade is uncertain, [....] includes explanatory material; other text lists features found pretty much throughout the clade. Note that the precise node to which many characters, particularly the more cryptic ones, should be assigned is unclear. This is partly because homoplasy is very common, in addition, basic information for all too many characters is very incomplete, frequently coming from taxa well embedded in the clade of interest and so making the position of any putative apomorphy uncertain. Then there are the not-so-trivial issues of how character states are delimited and ancestral states are reconstructed (see above).
Evolution: Divergence & Distribution. If Vahliaceae are sister to the [Gentianales, Solanales, Boraginales, Lamiales] clade, some of its apomorphies will have to be moved down the tree (see discussion elsewhere).
Phylogeny. For the relationships of Vahliales, see discussion under Gentianales.

1 [list]/8. Africa and Madagascar to India (map: from Bridson 1974; Trop. Afr. Fl. Pl. Ecol. Distr. 1. 2003).
Evolution: Divergence & Distribution. Friis and Skarby (1982) described two species of Scandianthus from the Upper Cretaceous of Sweden ca 83.5 Ma which they tentatively associated with Vahlia, and the morphological analysis of Martínez-Millán (2010) placed it here, however, no other lamiids were included. Scandianthus has an unilocular gynoecium with apical-lateral stipitate placentae and free styles and fruits with septicidal dehiscence. However, it has ten stamens, a decidedly unusual number for any gentianid, and so it may well be better placed somewhere around Cornales. Friis and Skarby (1982) also noted a phenetic similarity to some Hydrangeaceae, Phyllonomaceae, Escalloniaceae, and even some Saxifragaceae s. str., while Friis et al. (2011) were unsure where to place it - perhaps an early asterid?
Chemistry, Morphology, etc.. Although the ovary has only a single loculus, dehiscence of the fruit occurs between the styles, and this suggests dehiscence along the septal radii - assuming that the styles are carinal.
Some information is taken from Thouvenin (1890), Bridson (1974: monograph) and Thiv (2016), all general, Gornall and Al-Shammary (1998: anatomy), Raghavan and Srinivasan (1942) and Saxena (1973: both floral morphology and embryology, no parietal tissue), and Mauritzon (1933: ovules).
Previous relationships. Vahliaceae were included in Saxifragales by Cronquist (1981) and Takhtajan (1997).
