Appendix A: Vascular Plant Families of the Venezuelan Guayana

The following information is based on a working checklist for the Flora of the Venezuelan Guayana. Minor changes may occur upon publication of individual treatments. Volume 2 has been published and includes all the pteridophytes and the first eleven families of spermatophytes from Acanthaceae through Araceae. Projected volume breakdowns are indicated for the remaining families.

The angiosperm families follow Cronquist (1981), An Integrated System of Classification of Flowering Plants. Whereas some authors recognize a single family of legumes with three subfamilies, this system recognizes three families, the Fabaceae, Caesalpiniaceae, and the Mimosaceae. Cronquist also recognizes certain segregate families that may not be recognized in other systems, such as the Hugoniaceae and the Ixonanthaceae (often placed in the Linaceae) and the Costaceae (sometimes included in the Zingiberaceae). On the other hand, certain traditionally recognized families are subsumed into others, such as the Cochlospermaceae into the Bixaceae, and the Martyniaceae into the Pedaliaceae, and the Liliaceae are treated in an inclusive sense to include segregate families such as the Amaryllidaceae. Changes in family circumscriptions since the publication of Cronquist's system are reflected here, such as the publication of the Euphroniaceae and the placement of the genus Pakaraimaea in the Monotaceae instead of the Dipterocarpaceae.

Volume 2: Pteridophytes, Spermatophytes (Acanthaceae through Araceae). 1995.
Volume 3: Araliaceae through Cactaceae. 1997.
Volume 4: Caesalpiniaceae through Ericaceae. 1998.
Volume 5: Eriocaulaceae through Lentibulariaceae. 1999.
Volume 6: Liliaceae through Myrsinaceae. 2001.
Volume 7: Myrtaceae through Plumbaginaceae.
Volume 8: Poaceae through Rubiaceae.
Volume 9: Rutaceae through Zygophyllaceae.
