This checklist of the flora of the Fortuna dam region, i.e. the Fortuna watershed plus
the portion of adjacent Bocas del Toro down to an elevation of 900 m (western Panama, c.
8°45'N, 82°15'W), documents the occurrence of 1880 species of vascular plants
there. More species names will be added as identifications of as-yet-unstudied specimens
are made.
Much of the collecting in this rich tropical rainforest was made possible by grants
from the National Geographic Society. The co-operation and assistance of the
Instituto de Recursos Hidraulicos y Electricos of Panama is also gratefully acknowledged.
The arrangement of the checklist is alphabetical by family name, then by genus and
species names. Ferns and fern allies are grouped together under "Pteridophytes and Allied Families",
alphabetically by genus and species names. A single voucher collected within the
region is listed for each species. Duplicates of these vouchers can be found, in
nearly all cases, at the Panamanian National Herbarium (PMA) in Panama City and at the
herbarium of the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO); usually further duplicates can be
found at the Field Museum (F) and at the New York Botanical Garden (NY).
Suggestions of additions or other changes to the list are welcome and should be sent
