Rodolfo Vásquez
Rodolfo at Chacos, a semi-plateau at 2700 m, south of the town of Oxapampa, Peru.  Chacos is covered with sclerophyllous forests growing on white sand and hosts several endemic species known only from this locality, such as Crossothamnus pascoanus (Asteraceae), Diplostephium oxapampanum  (Asteraceae), and Drosera peruensis (Droseraceae).

General Research Interests

  • Taxonomy and ethnobotany of the vascular plants of the Amazon
  • Investigation of the long-term dynamics of rain forests in the New World
  • Development of strategies for sustainable management of natural resources—in particular, strategies at a local scale that can be applied at regional levels
  • Current Projects

  • A revision of Sloanea (Elaeocarpaceae) in Peru
  • Documentation of the floristic diversity and uses of plants in three Natural Protected Areas and their buffer zones in the Selva Central of Peru
  • Collaboration with other organizations to maintain a network of permanent plots in the Amazon and the Andes of Peru in order to document long-term rain forest dynamics
  • A community environmental education program aimed at developing self-sustainability of the indigenous Yanesha communities in the Palcazu River valley of central Peru, including working with children and adults to implement low-impact productive activities that encourage long-term conservation of natural resources and reduce pressure on the Natural Protected Areas
