2. AMPHILOPHIUM Kunth, J. Phys. Chim. Hist. Nat. Arts 87: 451. 1818.

Lianas, the branchlets sharply hexagonal with ribbed angles, without interpetiolar glandular fields, the indumentum at least in part of dendroid trichomes; pseudostipules foliaceous but often early deciduous. Leaves 2- or 3-foliolate; terminal leaflet frequently replaced by a trifid tendril. Inflorescence a narrow terminal panicle, typically terminal on a short lateral branch. Calyx campanulate, with a double margin, the outer margin thin and undulate, the inner margin thick; corolla magenta at maturity, thick, tubular, bilabiately split to near middle, but the lobes remaining loosely appressed at anthesis, glabrous or slightly puberulous outside. Anthers glabrous, the thecae thick, divaricate. Ovary ovate-cylindric; ovules multiseriate in each locule. Fruit an oblong-elliptic capsule, the valves parallel to septum, ± flattened, woody, smooth to tuberculate. Seeds thin, puberulous, the wings tan at base, the apices hyaline.

Mexico, Central America, Antilles, northern South America to northern Argentina; 5 species, 3 in Venezuela, 2 of these in the flora area.
