No reference could be found to an  Actaea spicata L. var. arguta Torr. HERB CHRISTOPHER, RED COHOSH "Readily found on Dufferin Islands," Panton (1890). Since it is paired with A. alba in Panton's paper, then most likely it is A. spicata ssp. rubra which is intended.
