Summer Internships on Analysis of Plant Distributions
at the Analysis Unit, Center for Conservation and Sustainable Development (CCSD),
Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG)

Guidelines for Applications

The Analysis Unit welcomes applications for a summer internship from biology students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Washington University, and Saint Louis University. Interns will be advised by CCSD staff and are expected to work full-time for three months (middle of May to middle of August) on particular aspects of ongoing projects at the Analysis Unit, focusing on the ecology and evolution of the geographic ranges of plants and spatial patterns of diversity. Conditional on satisfactory performance, students will be coauthors of resulting publications. One internship will be awarded each summer.

Resources

CCSD will provide interns with MBG facilities including office space, computer with internet access, and access to the herbarium and library. CCSD will also provide a stipend of $1000 per month for a period of three months.

Application requirements

The application should include the four items listed below:

1. A cover letter stating the applicant’s reasons for wanting to work at the Analysis Unit and including a paragraph describing the applicant’s previous experience with spatial data analysis—with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, or any type of spatial data analysis. If the applicant has no previous experience with spatial data analysis, the letter should indicate so.

2. Proof of full-time biology graduate student status at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Washington University, or Saint Louis University—namely, a letter from the chair of the applicant’s academic department stating the applicant’s current official status in the university.

3. A current sealed and signed letter of recommendation from the applicant’s primary graduate studies advisor.

4. A short curriculum vitae (limit: two pages). The curriculum vitae should include a separate section titled “Previous experience with spatial data analysis” and a list of publications of the applicant’s research work.

Deadline for applications is November 30, 2007.

Results will be announced on December 14, 2007.
