The crest, or rim of the Niagara
river gorge displays dolomite strata with thin soils. It is a harsh
environment yet this specimen of White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
manages to thrive in moist crevices in the caprock. This is a tree of swampy
habitats and its occurrence in this environment is a striking example of
adaptability.
