day this Spring. The winter has been extraordinarily mild, & we might
naturally expect it to be protracted. After dinner, I walked to the Dam,
across to Squaw Island, up it & the pier to the Ferry, and thence home by
Niagara St., &c., the way I came. The air was chilly, & yet, when
quiet & in sunshine, balmy warmish. The wild pigeons were flying, have
been flying for a week past, east. A few robins have been here perhaps a
fortnight. I noticed two small flocks of what I supposed to be blackbirds. On
the edge of the marsh on Squaw Island saw 2 or 3 sparrows, not the chipping‑bird
I think. In a pool, in the thawed edge of it, saw small fishes, probably
sticklebacks. The bay is full of field ice, the river is clear. About 5
P.M. it became clouded & a few snow flakes fell. Snowed in the night 1‑2
inches & April 1 comes in cold and threatening. |
