Extremely rare in western New York (Clinton Herbarium 1974) Protection: An
export permit is required under the International Convention on Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Canada (1973) 1975) ratified by
Canada and the United States. Protected by law in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New
York and Vermont, Argus & White (1977). Reported as rare and probably
absent from the Niagara Frontier flora probably due to habitat destruction by
Zander and Pierce (1979). This species is on the Rare Plant Status List of the New York Natural
Heritage Program (Young, 1992), where it is listed as vulnerable to extirpation
from the State flora.
Note that Zenkert interpreted Day's specimen
to derive from the Whirlpool area in New York State when it is more likely the
specimen derived from the Whirlpool area on the Ontario side, whence all the
other specimens were collected.
