Amelanchier sp. Crest of the Niagara River gorge between Devil's Hole and Whirlpool Steps, with Quercus rubra, Qu. alba, Tilia Americana, Carya glabra, C. ovalis, Eckel (Nov. 7 2004), crest area gorge-side of the pathside fence.

Amelanchier arborea (Michx. f.) Fern. TREE SHADBUSH. Ontario: Niagara Glen, high land, Miller (77), April 30, 1952, Heimburger (1955).

USA: New York. Niagara River. A. D. Pease May 30, 1883 (BUF); Roadside near entrance to Whirlpool State Park, east of crest of the Niagara River gorge. P. M. Eckel s.n. May 15, 1988 (BUF); DeVeaux steps N of Whirlpool State Park; near base of gorge, campsite area. P. M. Eckel s.n. May 5, 1987 (BUF).

These specimens should be compared with Amelanchier intermedia.

Amelanchier canadensis (L.) Medic. CANADIAN SHADBUSH. Goat Island, Sept. 19, 1877 (J. D. Hooker's American Journal). Ontario, Queen Victoria Park, Panton (1890). ). "Lewiston," Field Club, 1893. Ontario, Niagara Park System, Cameron (1895). Ontario: Niagara, Wm. Scott, May 12, 1906 (TRT 18194), Heimburger (1955). var. botryapium Gray. "Goat Island," Day (1888). var. oblongifolia Gray. "Goat Island. Clifton, Ontario," Day (1888). Ontario, Niagara Park System, Cameron (1895). var. rotundifolia. Ontario, Niagara Park System, Cameron (1895).

(Sensu lato) Canada, Niagara Glen, Porter, May 7, 1898 (BUF).

In Fernald's Gray's Manual of Botany, corrected printing by Rollins, 1970, A. oblongifolia T.& G. and A. botryapium (L. f.) Borkh. are given as synonyms of A. canadensis, hence, the varieties using these epithets are probably synonyms of the latter species.

Amelanchier humilis Wieg. (As A. stolonifera) about 1 mile S of Queenston Power House, Soper & Shields (4381), May 19, 1950 (TRT 82.939), Heimburger (1955).

It is presumed here that Heimburger's citation refers to this species -note the station map by Soper and Heimburger (1982) that places a site about where the Queenston Power House is, whereas the map of A. stolonifera does not show this station (see synonymy). Amelanchier humilis indicates this species is "widely distributed throughout Ontario, the common dwarf species in calcareous habitats" (Soper & Heimburger, 1982) - it is not rare in New York (Mitchell 1986). In Zenkert's 1934 flora of the Niagara Frontier Region, A. humulis was indicated as rare in the Niagara Frontier Region, with only two stations and these from Genesee County.

A. sanguinea var. grandiflora (Wieg.) Rehder is rare in Ontario (Argus & White 1977) but considered for the New York State flora to be a synonym of A. sanguinea by Mitchell (1986). The latter appears to be rather common in Ontario (Soper & Heimburger 1982).
