XX. HAGENIELLA Brotherus,
Oefvers. Förh. Finska Vetensk.-Soc..
52 A[7]: 4. 1910 * [For I. Hagen,
1852--1917, Norwegian bryologist] W. B. Schofield Schofieldiella Buck, J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 82: 39. 1997 Plants slender, small, yellowish to
golden-green or brownish, glossy, forming dense, shallow, creeping mats of
irregularly branched shoots 1--3(--6) cm.
Leaves appressed to erect-spreading,
sometimes weakly secund, ovate, concave, 0.2--0.5 mm, curving to base, weakly
or not decurrent, apex toothed, costa forked or absent, confined to near
base. Leaf cells smooth, linear-flexuose to hexagonal in most of
lamina, shorter toward apex, alar cells with a basal row of somewhat inflated
rounded pigmented or colorless cells and smaller thin-walled rectangular
supra-alar cells. Sexual condition dioicous.
Seta short, 10--15 mm, smooth,
red-brown. Capsule inclined,
sometimes nodding when dry and operculate, slightly curved and asymmetric,
ovoid to short-cylindric, 0.5--1 mm, operculum short-rostrate, exothecial
cells with longitudinal walls slightly thicker than radial walls; peristome
double, exostome teeth bordered, cross-striolate basally, papillose distally,
endostome with high basal membrane, segments nearly same length as exostome
teeth, cilia double. Species 4--5 (1 in the flora): widely but disjunctively
distributed, mainly in the N. Hemisphere,
North America, w The genus Hageniella
was recently noted by B. C. Tan and Y. Jia (1999) to be identical to the
genus Schofieldiella proposed by W.
R. Buck (1997). These authors also argue for its placement in the
Sematophyllaceae, rather than the Hylocomiaceae, where Buck placed it. SELECTED REFERENCES
