Passiflora luzmarina of supersection Tacsonia was described in 1997 by P.M.Jørgensen. In contrast to the bee-pollinated groups with shallow flowers and large coronas, this supersection has almost lost its corona and odor and has evolved long floral tubes well adapted to pollination by hummingbirds. This species has been found only in a few fence rows in southern Ecuador and must be considered endangered.
