The Striped Civet is the second largest Malagasy carnivore, after the Fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox). (Evidently, an early confusion of these two predators has been perpetuated in the similarity of the Malagasy name for one and the scientific name of the other.) A larger species of Fosa is now extinct.
