Madagascar's primates alone would make the island a major conservation priority. Lemurs are native only to Madagascar and constitute 5 of the 14 families of living primates. This diversity has been diminished by the extinction of 8 genera and at least 15 species since the arrival of humans. At present there are 32 known lemur species, 10 of which are considered critically endangered.

With no competition from other social primates, lemurs have developed social patterns that parallel those of monkeys and apes in other areas.
