A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Stylus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. stylo, in Botanical Latin: ‘style,’ q.v.; (in fungi) “(obsol.) the ostiolum of certain Fungals” (Lindley); see ostiolum,-i (s.n.II).

NOTE: in classical Latin the noun ‘stilis,-i’ (s.m.II), meaning a stake or pale, a stem or stalk of a plant, as of the asparagus, does not derive from the Greek noun ‘stylos’ (s.m.II) (Lewis & Short).

Greek stylos (s.m.II): pillar, esp as a support or bearing; a wooden pole; tent-poles, uprights; ‘stile’ for writing on waxed tablets; wrongly used in this sense by Greek speakers at Alexandria and in the east, according to Herophilus” (Liddell & Scott).

Stylidion (s.n.II): a small pillar.

Stylis,-idos (s.f.III), dim. of ‘stylos’ (Liddell & Scott); see –stylis,-idis (s.f.III).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
