Gynobase (Eng.noun), “the growing point inserted between the base of carpels in a conical manner, so as to throw them into an oblique position” (Lindley); (as' Gynobase)' “ [> Gk. basis, a pedestal] an enlargement of the torus on which the gynaeceum rests” (Jackson); “a fleshy receptacle, bearing separate fruits” (Paxton); “an enlargement or prolongation of the receptacle bearing the ovary” (Fernald 1950): gynobasis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. gynobase; see basis;

- [Ochnaceae] stylus l filiformis persistens basi ampliatus in discum subglobosum carnosum ovarii loculamenta gerentem et gynabasim dictum. Pericarpii loculamenta seu carpella tot quot petala, gynobasi grandifactae articulatim inserta, circa stylum verticillata, 1-sperma, indehiscentia, subdrupacea (DeCandolle), style one, filiform, persistent, enlarged at the base into a subglobose, fleshy disc bearing the loculamenta of the ovary and called the gynobase. The Loculaments of the pericarpium or carpels as many as the petals, inserted [in the manner of a joint] on the enlarged gynobase, verticillate around the style, one-seeded, indehiscent, nearly drupaceous.

- pericarpii loculamenta seu carpella tot quot petala, gynobasi grandifactae articulatim inserta, circa stylum verticillata (DeCandolle), the loculamenta or carpels of the pericarpium as many as the petals, in a jointed fashion inserted on the enlarged gynobase, verticillate around the style.

- stylus 1. Lobi 4 drupacei [1]-spermi e gynobasi carnosa orti (DeCandolle), style one, the lobes 4, like a drupe, one seeded, having arisen from the fleshy gynobase.
