A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Fistula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. fistula: a pipe, tube, such as a water pipe, syn. tubus, canalis, sypho: tubular vessels; a hollow reed-stalk, a reed, cane; cf. vitta,-ae (s.f.I), aromatic oil-tube in fruit of Umbelliferae; “narrow fistulae lodged in the coat of the fruit of Umbellifers, and containing oil” (Lindley); see cuniculum,-i (s.n.II); see cylinder; cf. hyponom-: in Gk. comp.; see cnemis,-idis (s.f.III); see duct, tube;

- [Saccharum ravennae] planta pulcherissima. E culmis fistulas ad hauriendum tabaci fumum parant Arabes (Desf.), a most beautiful plant. The Arabs prepare pipes from the culms for inhaling the smoke of tobacco.

- foliis ut fistula involutis, with leaves involute like a pipe.

- [Saccharum ravennae] Planta pulcherrima. E culmis fistulas ad hauriendum tabaci fumum parant Arabes (Desf.), a most beautiful plant. From the culms the Arabs prepare pipes for drawing up the smoke of tabacco.

Calamus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., abl. sg. calamo: a reed; any reed-shaped stalk, as in Cyperaceae or Poaceae; “(obsol.) a fistular stem without an articulation [i.e. joint or node]” (Lindley; Jackson).
