A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Epithecium, the surface of the fructifying disc in Lichens (Jackson); “the surface of the disc in certain Discomycetes; the layer (e.g. the ends of paraphyses) above the asci” (Ainsworth & Bisby): epithecium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. epithecio; cf. thecium, hypothecium; see apothecium;’

- [lichen] ‘Epithallus’ superficiem externam summam designat strati corticalis coloratam magisque saepe induratam, similiter ac ‘epithecium’ superficiem superam exprimit hymenii (sive thecii, ut quoque appellatur) (Nyl.), ‘epithallus’ designates the outer, highest surface, colored and more often indurate, of the cortical layer, similarly as ‘epithecium’ represents the upper surface of the hymenium (or of the thecium, as it is also called).

- [Baeomyces; lichen] apothecia aurantiaco-rufa, epithecio obscuriore, breviter stipitata vel interdum subsessilia (Nyl.), apothecia orange-red, with the epithecium more dull, shortly stipitate or sometimes nearly sessile.

- [lichen] apothecia pallide testacea plana vel concaviuscula mediocria, margine undulato obtuso, epithecio fere concolore (solum magis opaco et obsolete igitur cinerascente), longiuscule stipitata (Nyl.), the apothecia pale brick-red flat or somewhat concave, medium-sized, with the margin wavy, obtuse, with the epithecium almost the same color (only more opaque and therefore scarcely ash-white.

- [lichen] арothecia pallide carneo-rufa sat parva, stipite crassulo sicco varie compresso vel plicato, epithecio plano nonnihil fuscescente (Nyl.), apothecia pale fleshy-red, quite small, with the stipe rather thick, dry, variously compressed or plicate, with the epithecium flat a little darkened.

- [lichen] apothecia nigricantia aggregata minuta marginata, juniora epithecio concaviusculo (Nyl.), the apothecia blackish, aggregated, minute, bordered, the younger ones with a somewhat concave epithecium.

Apothecium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. apothecio: “1. an organ of fructification peculiar to lichens, and usually cup-shaped ‘Shields;’ 2. bowl-shaped fructifications in Pezizaceae” (Jackson).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
