A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Charta,-ae (s.f.I): a leaf of the Egyptian papyrus; paper [> L. charta,-ae (s.f.I): “the papyrus plant itself; that which is written upon paper, a writing, letter, poem, etc.; ; a thin leaf, plate, lamina, tablet” (Lewis & Short); ‘paper’ made from papyrus, or a sheet of it; writings,’pages’ (Glare), [> Gk. chartEs,-ou (s.m.III), “papyrus, a roll of papyrus; any leaf or thin plate” as of metal (Liddell & Scott) ; chartEs (s.m.III), a leaf of the Egyptian papyrus, paper (Lewis & Short)]; see paper.

NOTE: also a thin leaf of substance: charta plumbea, lead-leaf, charta aurea, gold-leaf.

NOTE: charta (pharm.) paper, a powder in a paper (Bennitt). Div. in chart. (Divide in chartas), divide into powders. Misce diligentissime ut fiat pulvis. Divide in chartas sex. Unus quartis horis si opus sit sumendus; Mix very carefully that a powder may be made. Divide into six powders. One to be taken every four hours if necessary (Bennitt).

- charta cerata (part.A): waxed paper.

- charta utilis scribendo (Dative), paper useful for writing.

- charta coerulea (adj.A), (pharm.) blue litmus paper (Bennitt).

- charta emporetica (adj.A), merchant paper, packing paper, brown paper.

- charta exploratoria (adj.A), (pharm.) test paper. (Bennitt)

- charta exploratoria caerulea: blue litmus-paper.

- charta exploratoria rubefacta: red-litmus paper.

- charta fumifera (adj.A), charta nitrata (adj.A):(pharm.), nitre paper, asthma paper (for inhaling) (Bennitt).

- charta synapis: (pharm.) a mustard plaster, a mustard paper (Bennitt).

- [moss] Gymnostomi truncatì radices sordibus purgatae colorem rubellum amoenum ostendunt, quo chartae papyraceae leuiter tinguntur (Brid.), the roots of Gymnostomum truncatum when cleansed of impurities displays a lovely reddish color, by which papyraceous papers are lightly tinged.

- [algae] rigidiusculis et parum gelatinosis, unde levius tantum chartae adhaeret (Agardh), somewhat rigid and slightly gelatinous, whence [i.e. for which reason] it adheres only lightly to the paper.

- (algae) siccata purpurascit, chartae laxe adhaeret (Agardh), in the dry state it becomes purple, it adheres loosely to the paper.

- (algae) siccata sistit paginam viridem, opacam, hic & illic granulatam vel farinaceam, chartae arcte adhaerentem (Agardh), when dried it consituts a green surface, opaque, here and there granulate or farinaceous, closely adhering to the paper.

- (algae) caespes minutus uncialis vel parum ultra, ex purpureo nigrescens, chartae laxe adhaerens (Agardh), the clump minute, an inch long or somewhat more, from purple to blackish, loosely adhering to paper.

- [Zygnema; algae] Siccata [Z.] Virginea nitida, chartae adhaeret, [Z.] seminifera cinerascens, chartae non vel laxius tantum adhaeret (Agardh), when dried out Z. virginea shining, adheres to the paper, Z. seminifera grows an ash-gray, not or only more loosely adheres to the paper.

Macrosporium chartarum, Pk., a fungus that grows on wall-paper.
