Born in Minneapolis, Granlund graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and then studied in Florence and Rome. He then taught at Washington University in St. Louis and since 1971 has been the Sculptor In Residence at Gustavus Adolphus College.

The title is derived from "Zero-G" for a gravity-free condition, as suggested by the joyous whirling of the family group. The bronzes were cast by the lost-wax process.
