A week of record-breaking heat has pushed the spring season ahead with alarming
speed, insuring that some plants will have gone in and out of bloom by the time
this report is published. Nonetheless, flowers abound as the grounds are at
the peak of spring bloom.
Dogwoods and crabapples are in full bloom throughout the grounds. Azaleas are
becoming quite showy. Redbuds are past peak but still showy.
Kwanzan cherries (Prunus serulata 'Kwanzan') in the Japanese Garden are
past peak bloom, but still showy.
Tulips, daffodils and other late spring bulbs are at peak bloom throughout the
Garden. Woodland wildflowers are showy in the English Woodland Garden.
Large drifts of white and blue Spanish bluebells (Hyacinthoides hispanica)
dot the understory in the Mausoleum Garden.
The Shoenberg Temperate House is at its peak of spring color. The beautful
soft-pink blossoms of the Australian wax flower (Chamelaucium ciliatum)
cascade over the stairs. The tiled Moorish garden features Easter lilies
(Lilium longiflorum) and the vibrant blue daisies of cineraria
(Pericallis hybrids). Look for the regal delphinium-like spikes of the
Pride of Madiera (Echium candicans) upstairs.
Give your nose a treat and visit the Linnean House! Jasmine (Jasminum
polyanthemum) fills the house with its heady aroma. Also stop to smell
the bright yellow blooms of the Canary Island broom (Genista canariensis)
and the sweetly fragrant Mexican orange (Choisya ternata).
