The peak spring season is here with Azaleas, Redbuds and Dogwoods
blooming along with a great display of Daffodils, Tulips, and other
spring bulbs in many locations on the Grounds.
Bluebells and Celandine poppies are among the many perennials and
wildflowers blooming along with Dogwoods and Redbuds in the English
Woodland Garden. The Silverbell trees are especially showy this week.
Kwanzan cherries are at peak bloom in the Japanese Garden. The
emerging foliage of the Japanese maples is very ornamental.
It's peak blooming time in the Shoenberg Temperate House, especially
in the Mediterranean section on the upper level. Climbing white roses
(Rosa bankiae 'Alba Plena') and the yellow Wisteria-like blooms of the
Golden-chain tree (Laburnum x wateri 'Vossii') cascade over the walls
of the Moorish Garden. The tiled fountain display features Easter
lilies and Hydrangeas.
The sweet fragrance of Jasmine permeates the air in the Linnean
House. The fragrant yellow blossoms of the Canary Island broom
(Genista canariensis) surround the fountain in the center. Camellias
are nearly finished, but a few are still showy.
Pansies in the Lois Whiteside Franklin Flower Trial Garden at the
Kemper Center for Home Gardening are becoming very showy.
Tulips and Pansies in the large beds in the Milles Sculpture Garden
make a showy combination.
